A medium check-in trolley — roughly 65 to 70 cm tall — is the workhorse of Indian family travel. It carries a week of clothes for one person, or a long weekend for two, and it fits the standard 15 kg domestic check-in allowance on most low-cost fares without going overweight.

Under ₹3,000 you can buy a properly branded medium trolley with spinner wheels and a warranty, particularly during the Great Indian Festival and Diwali sales. This research-based guide explains the sizes, the materials, and the features that are worth paying for, then lists models currently on Amazon.in that regularly appear in this budget.

Our method: we compared published specifications, warranty terms and brand service presence in India. We have not physically tested these bags, and we do not show prices because they change constantly. Click "Check price on Amazon" for the live price.

Which size do you really need?

Trolley height Typical capacity Best for
55 cm (cabin) 35–45 L 2–4 days, carry-on only
65–70 cm (medium) 60–75 L 5–10 days, one person; 15 kg allowance
75–79 cm (large) 90–110 L Long trips, families, 23 kg+ international allowances

The trap with large bags is weight: a full 75 cm trolley can easily exceed 15 kg, and excess baggage at Indian airports often costs several hundred rupees per kilo. For domestic travel, a medium bag is usually the sweet spot. If you fly internationally with a 23 kg allowance, a large bag starts to make sense. See our trolley size guide for more.

Features worth paying for

  1. Double spinner wheels. Medium bags are heavy when full; good wheels decide whether the bag rolls or drags.
  2. A sturdy multi-stage handle. Wiggle in the handle is the first sign of a weak bag.
  3. Expandable zip. Useful for Diwali gifts and shopping on the way back, as long as you stay within the weight limit.
  4. Built-in or recessed lock. A fixed number lock means one less thing to carry.
  5. Warranty of 3 years or more from a brand with service centres in India.

How to pick in 30 seconds

Packing a medium bag to stay under 15 kg

Common mistakes

Buying "large" because it's only slightly more expensive. A large bag tempts you to fill it, and excess baggage costs can wipe out the savings within one trip.

Ignoring the seller. Fake or grey-market listings exist. Check that the brand appears in the listing title and that the seller is reputable.

Not checking on arrival. Within the return window, open and close every zip, run the handle up and down, and roll the bag on a hard floor to listen for grinding wheels.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 66 cm bag enough for 15 kg? Yes. A medium bag filled with normal clothes usually lands between 12 and 17 kg, so it is the right size for most domestic allowances.

Is PP or PC better for check-in? For check-in, where bags are thrown around, PP's flexibility is an advantage. PC is fine too but will show scuffs.

Should I buy a set instead? If you need both a cabin and a medium bag, 2- or 3-piece sets can work out cheaper per bag during sales. Compare the combined price with buying singles.

Bottom line

A 65–70 cm polypropylene spinner from Safari or Kamiliant gives the best value under ₹3,000 for most Indian travellers. Choose polycarbonate for looks or a soft case for flexibility, and always check weight, warranty and seller before ordering.

Appendix: what the spec sheet terms mean

"Hard case" vs "hardside": both mean a rigid shell, usually PP, PC or ABS. ABS is the cheapest and the most brittle of the three; at this budget we prefer PP or PC.

"8 wheels" vs "4 wheels": an 8-wheel bag has four pairs of wheels. Each pair shares the load, so it tends to roll more smoothly and quietly. A 4-wheel bag has four single wheels; it can be lighter but may feel less stable on rough tiles.

"Expandable": a zip running around the middle adds roughly 3–5 cm of depth. Use it on the return leg when you are carrying gifts, but remember the extra volume makes it easy to go overweight.

"Number lock" and "TSA lock": a number lock is built into the shell or zip. A TSA lock can be opened by US security staff with a master key without breaking it, which matters only if you fly to or through the USA.

"Wet pocket" or "wet pouch": a waterproof compartment for damp towels or swimwear. Nice to have, not essential.
